Locals rescued a fishing cat cub in the Tahirpur border area of Sunamganj. The cub was recovered from a paddy field in the border area of Rangachara, in Sreepur North union, on Saturday afternoon (29 November), and was later handed over to the forest department.

Farmers harvesting paddy in a haor at Rangachara suddenly saw an unfamiliar animal in the field and caught it. Local resident Md Jewel Mia then kept the fishing cat at his home.

Jewel Mia said: "Tahirpur is a border area, so when the animal came into the village from the nearby hills or forest, we caught it and brought it in. BGB and the forest department officer have been informed. It will be handed over when forest officials arrive."

Tahirpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mehedi Hasan Manik said the forest department officer had been instructed to recover the animal, and arrangements would be made to move it quickly to a safe place.

District forest department range officer Riaz Uddin said haor farmers had caught a fishing cat cub in a paddy field in the Tahirpur border area. When the forest department was informed, it went to the spot and recovered the cub.

He added that now the haor water has receded, fishing cat cubs lie in wait to catch fish, but they do not attack people.
