Local workers in the border area of Tahirpur in Sunamganj have caught a fishing cat cub and tied it up with a chain.

It was caught on the bank of the Jadukata river on Friday (6 March) afternoon. Riaz Uddin, an official of the Sunamganj forest department, said a process to rescue the animal had begun.

Locals spotted the fishing cat on the bank of the Jadukata river at Laurergarh, in the Tahirpur border area, on Friday afternoon. Workers there then caught it and chained it up. More than a hundred people gathered in the village after hearing that a fishing cat had been caught.

Local worker Din Islam said: "Yesterday we saw a fishing cat on the bank of the Jadukata river and all of us there caught it together. It is still here. We have told the forest officials. They will come and take action."

Riaz Uddin of the Sunamganj forest department said: "We have learned that a fishing cat was caught in the border area. The animal will be rescued by noon today and released into the forest."
