A huge python has been rescued from the ceiling of a house in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar.

The snake was rescued unharmed on Thursday morning, 21 May, from the home of Khalil Mia, a resident of the Pachaun area of the upazila, and was later handed over to the forest department.

According to family members and local sources, when Khalil Mia and his family woke up that morning they saw the huge python on the bamboo of the ceiling. The whole family panicked at the sight of such a big snake inside the house. As word spread, curious people crowded into the house, and at one point some agitated villagers got ready to beat the snake to death.

A neighbour then informed the Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation. The foundation's director Swapan Deb Sajal and environmental activist Rajdeep Deb Deep quickly reached the spot, calmed the crowd and, with great care, rescued the snake unharmed.

Sreemangal forest range officer Md Nazmul Islam confirmed the incident and said the rescued python was healthy. It will soon be released deep in the forest of Lawachhara National Park or the sanctuary.
