A young man named Farhad Hossain, 25, has died after being bitten by a venomous snake in Chatkhil, Noakhali.

He died in the early hours of 9 September at the 250-bed general hospital. Farhad had been bitten at around midnight at his in-laws' home in Malangchar village of the upazila.

Farhad Hossain was the son of Majibul Haque of Kanari Bari in Mohammadpur union of the upazila.

His father, Majibul Haque, said that on the night of 8 September, as Farhad put his foot on the floor from the bed in the bedroom of his in-laws' house, a venomous snake struck him four times in a row. He was taken to Chatkhil Upazila Health Complex and, as his condition worsened, to Noakhali General Hospital for better treatment, where he died.

Dr Nur Mohammad, disease controller at Chatkhil Upazila Health Complex, said that when Farhad was brought in after the bite, the doctor on duty gave him antivenom injections. But when his condition worsened, he was sent to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital for better treatment, as the health complex has no ICU.

Saying the hospital has enough antivenom to treat snakebite patients, general hospital superintendent Dr Helal Uddin told Jagonews that 15 snakebite patients had been admitted in 24 hours. So far 553 snakebite patients have been treated, including 392 in August.
