A farmer named Ahmed Ali (65) has died after being trampled by wild elephants in Sreebardi, a border upazila of Sherpur. The incident took place around noon on Wednesday (7 January) in the Nepalir Bhita area of the upazila's Balijhuri range.
Ahmed Ali was the son of the late Kanai Sheikh of Malakucha village in Rani Shimul union.
Attacked while cutting grass
Relatives said Ahmed Ali left home at 9am to cut grass for his cattle in the Nepalir Bhita area of the Balijhuri range. Shortly before noon, while he was cutting grass, a herd of wild elephants suddenly attacked him and his chest was crushed under their feet. Local people quickly rescued him and took him to the upazila health complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
On receiving the news, sub-inspector (SI) Md Anas Ali of Sreebardi police station visited the scene with a police team and prepared the inquest report on the body.
Confirming the incident, Balijhuri range officer Md Sumon Mia said the forest department will give financial assistance to the dead man's family.
Mohammad Nurul Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sreebardi police station, said an unnatural death case has been filed with the police station over the incident.
