A young man named Majnu Mia, 28, has died of a snakebite in Rajibpur, Kurigram. His relatives allege that when the poisoning set in he was taken to Rajibpur Upazila Health Complex, but as it had no vaccine he was referred to Mymensingh, and he died on the way.
The incident happened at about 10am on Tuesday 5 August when he went to cut jute in the South Dag field at Shiberdangi in Rajibpur union. He was the son of Abul Hashem of that village.
Kept working after the bite
Local people and his family said Majnu Mia went to cut jute in the South Dag field at about 10am on Tuesday, when a venomous snake bit him. At first he did not take it seriously and carried on working. Later, seeing a snake go into a hole, he dug it out and killed it.
When poisoning set in around midday, he was taken to hospital. The doctor on duty referred him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, and he died on the way.
Dr Sarwar Jahan, family planning officer at Rajibpur Upazila Health Complex, said the hospital had two vaccines, but they were not fit for use. With the patient in a serious condition, there was no scope to treat him there either, so he was referred elsewhere for better treatment.
