Onions are selling at Rs 60 to 70 a kg in West Bengal's retail markets. To ease the pressure on households, the state agricultural marketing department has begun selling onions at Rs 35 a kg at nine places in Purba Bardhaman district through the regulated market committee, the Kolkata daily Sangbad Pratidin reported. The sales will run until 15 October.
The onions come from Nashik in Maharashtra, bought by the state department through the central agency NAFED, and are being sold in towns across the state. Bibhan Pal, secretary of the Purba Bardhaman regulated market committee, said camps are being held mainly in Bardhaman, Katwa and Kalna.
A fair-price counter opened at Curzon Gate in Bardhaman on Tuesday, 6 October, and sold 150 kg of onions on its first day. The onions are sold in two-kilogram packs.
Nikhil Das, a shopper in Bardhaman, said he was afraid to buy onions at market prices. Onions are indispensable in the kitchen, and high prices are squeezing households.
