Two hundred and fifty women farmers in Dumki upazila of Patuakhali have been trained to grow vegetables by modern methods on homestead and fallow land. At the end of the course on Tuesday, 6 October, each received seeds of six kinds of vegetables at the auditorium of Palli Seba Sangstha (PSS), the organisation that ran it.
The women were trained in four batches of three days each. The course covered vegetable growing on homestead and fallow plots, raising yields, controlling pests and diseases, safe production and selling the produce. They were also shown how to use information technology in farming.
Upazila agriculture officer Imran Hossain opened the programme, with sub-assistant agriculture officers Torun Haldar and Farzana Lina present. The chief guest was Oliul Islam, upazila social services officer and administrator of Sreerampur union parishad, and PSS director Hossain Ahmmad Kabir Howlader presided.
Speakers said planned vegetable growing on homestead and fallow land meets a family's nutritional needs and earns extra income from the surplus, giving women a way to become financially self-reliant.
The organisers said the aim is to bring homestead and fallow land into production through better seed and hands-on training, so that the women earn more.
