A 10-month-old child named Ariyan has died after being bitten by a venomous snake in Dashmina, Patuakhali.

The incident happened at around 8pm on 12 June in South Adampur village of Baharampur union in the upazila. Ariyan was the son of Arman Mia, a resident of the village.

Locals and family members said Ariyan was sleeping with his parents that night when his parents woke to his sudden scream. They turned on the light and saw a venomous snake moving across the floor of the room. Hearing their cries, household members and neighbours rushed in and beat the snake to death. Ariyan was then rushed to Dashmina Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

The child's father, Arman Mia, said: "My son was sleeping right beside us. When he suddenly screamed, we got up and saw a snake next to him. Then the neighbours came and killed the snake."

He added: "When my son stopped breathing, we took him to hospital. But the doctor declared him dead after examining him."

Shawkat Osman, a doctor at Dashmina Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that the child died of snakebite.

He said: "The child was brought to hospital at 9:20pm. Family members said a snake had bitten him. Snakebite marks were found on his hand. But the child died before being brought to hospital."
