The forest department has rescued an injured nilgai from a border area of Panchagarh. Local people spotted the animal on the morning of Sunday (11 May) in a maize field at Sarkarpara, a border village in Garinabari union of the Sadar upazila. Staff of the Panchagarh livestock department arranged treatment for it on the spot.

Forest officials and local people said the forest department was informed after the nilgai was seen in the maize field at Sarkarpara. Forest department staff came and rescued it at noon. Injuries were visible on its legs and several other parts of its body.

Joynul Haque of Sarkarpara village said: "The nilgai was hiding in my maize field. Because it was injured, it could not get out."

Panchagarh forest department official Haripada Debnath said: "We rescued the nilgai after receiving the information. It was injured in several places while squeezing through a gap in the barbed-wire border fence. Efforts are under way with the help of the livestock department to nurse it back to health. Once it has fully recovered, action will be taken according to the instructions of higher authorities."
