Environmental activists and local people have rescued a civet (known locally as bagdash or gondhogokul) that was trapped in a farmer's net in Naldanga upazila of Natore.

The animal was rescued from a paddy field in the Piprul Centre area of the upazila at midday on Thursday (2 October).

Local farmer Gaharul Pramanik said the animal had been caught in a net he had set in his field. With the help of local people he brought the animal, still in the net, to the market and informed environmental activists.

Md Fazle Rabbi, central publicity secretary of the Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation (BBCF) and general secretary of the environmental organisation Sabuj Bangla, said his team reached the spot after being alerted by local residents. Together with locals they rescued the civet, which was later released into its natural environment.

Local environmental activists and political leaders were present when the civet was rescued and released.
