The National Press Club has organised a tree-planting programme. Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud opened it at 12.30pm on Sunday (11 September).

He inaugurated the programme by planting a pomegranate sapling in the press club's green zone.

Dr Hasan Mahmud said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched a tree-planting programme through the Krishak League in 1983, soon after returning to the country. When she formed the government in 1996, tree planting became a movement in Bangladesh. Under her leadership, tree-covered area and forest land have increased in Bangladesh, because awareness among people has grown.

The minister thanked the press club, saying its tree-planting programme would strengthen such activities across the country.

National Press Club president Farida Yasmin said the prime minister has asked people to plant fruit, flower and medicinal trees, and today's programme follows on from that alongside various other activities.

Thirty fruit trees of various kinds, including pomegranate, jamrul, chalta, kamranga, olive, guava, latkan, mango and jam, are to be planted under the programme.

Former information adviser to the prime minister Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, former National Press Club president Saiful Alam and others were present.
