With winter approaching, growers in Munshiganj have begun producing and selling seedlings of early winter vegetables, mainly in Panchasar, Rampal and Bajrajogini in the Sadar upazila.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, seedlings of cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, tomato, aubergine, chilli and other vegetables are raised on about 10 hectares in Sadar from August to October. Beyond local demand, they are sent to Savar, Manikganj, Keraniganj, Rangpur, Sylhet, Habiganj, Cumilla and Chandpur.
Growers estimate sales of about Tk 70 to 80 million in a three-to-four-month season, from more than 150 large and small seedling operations. Atiq Hasan of Panchasar says he has about 50 seedbeds on 50 decimals, each used for several rounds, and sells Tk 4 to 4.5 million of seedlings a season.
Dr Md Habibur Rahman, deputy director of the district's agricultural extension office, said seedling production has become a profitable business in Munshiganj, with growers earning up to Tk 1 to 1.2 million per bigha, and the department is helping with production and marketing.
