What began as a hobby for Nur Mohammad of Khajadanga village in Rupsha upazila, Khulna, is now a profitable fish business. Planned management, modern husbandry and fattening carp, building up their weight quickly before sale, have brought him success. Fisheries officers say the method offers roughly three times the profit of conventional fish farming.
The farm began in 2019, when the brothers started mixed fish farming as a pastime in a pond of about three acres bought by his younger brother, S M Nuruzzaman Biplob. As they gained experience it became a commercial venture.
Today the pond holds several carp species, with the emphasis on fattening: quality feed at set times, good water quality, regular care and disease prevention.
Nur Mohammad said he first saw fish farming as a hobby but came to see its potential; planned farming has raised both output and income, and it is now a major regular source of income for him.
Fisheries officials say carp fattened the right way reach market weight in a comparatively short time, keeping costs down and profits up. The farm has become an example for others in the area interested in commercial fish farming.
