The United Kingdom needs to grow more trees to meet its goals for timber, carbon and biodiversity, Forestry Commission chair Baroness Young of Old Scone said at a reception marking the 50th anniversary of the APF Show, The Scottish Farmer reports.
She said the commission's remit spans timber, biodiversity, climate change, public access, health, flood risk, water quality and soils. "Multi-purpose forestry is not as easy as it sounds," she said, but the answer was to do more across all of them rather than choose between competing aims. "As a nation we need to grow more trees to meet that broad range of objectives," she said, describing herself as being like Oliver Twist: "I want more."
Baroness Young also argued that timber security should get more attention alongside food security as part of national resilience, and backed wider use of timber in construction. The report is by Glen Barclay.
