Ebola has now killed more than 4,000 people in Congo. Official figures put the toll at 4,018 as of Friday, with 8,300 confirmed cases across seven provinces and more than 2,000 recoveries.
The outbreak began with the Bundibugyo species of Ebola virus and has already overtaken the 2018 to 2020 outbreak to become Congo's largest and deadliest. In deaths it ranks second only to the 2014 to 2016 West African epidemic, when more than 28,600 people were infected and over 11,000 died in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Congo's government and the United Nations said last month there were signs of slowing transmission in parts of Ituri province, where the outbreak began, but the virus is spreading fast in the east and continues to spread in neighbouring North Kivu.
South Ubangi province in the northwest was declared the seventh affected province last month, after a man who travelled there from eastern Congo died of Ebola.
