Days after two pairs of snakes were rescued from the Barishal range DIG's office, a kalnagini snake about four feet long has been rescued from inside an air conditioner at a private clinic in the city.

Members of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali rescued the snake from an AC unit at the Barishal Medical Services clinic in the city's Sagardi area on the afternoon of Sunday, 14 June, and handed it over to the forest department.

Dr S M Abul Hasan, owner of the clinic and former principal of Patuakhali Medical College, said company staff who came to remove an AC unit and take it to his home saw two snakes inside, causing panic. They called the national emergency service 999, which advised them to contact Asadullah Hasan Musa, director of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali. He went to the clinic and began the rescue.

Musa said the four-foot kalnagini was removed from inside the AC after about two hours. There is scrub behind the clinic, and the snake probably got in through the AC pipe or a gap in the wall. Although clinic staff said they saw two snakes, only one was found. The snake is an adult but is not deadly to humans, he said.

Arifur Rahman, officer in charge of the social forestry department's Barishal Sadar range, said the snake was handed to them and later released at the Kashipur social forestry nursery and training centre.

Four kalnagini snakes (two pairs) were rescued from the DIG's room at the Barishal range DIG office on 7 and 8 June. The string of snake rescues at government and private offices in a short time has worried city residents.
