Army members have seized more than a tonne (1,050kg) of hilsa being smuggled to India via Kasba in Brahmanbaria.

The fish were seized on Monday afternoon, 23 September, from the Adra area of the upazila's Binauti union as they were being taken towards India in a pickup.

The soldiers also detained a young man, Sarowar Alam, 27, on charges of involvement in the smuggling. He is the son of Shahid Bhuiyan of the area.

According to local and upazila administration sources, the fish were being carried in a pickup to be smuggled into India. Acting on a tip-off, an army team conducted a drive inside Adra village and seized the pickup with 1,050kg of hilsa, detaining one young man.

Confirming the matter, Kasba Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Muhammad Shahriar Muktar said the detained man would be handed over to the police after a case is filed.
