FruitsThe Siam Green and Siam Blue coconuts brought in under the year-round fruit project yield well with proper care and water, but farmers who planted and left them have been disappointed.
Four years after the first plantings in 2022, growers in Grabouw and Ceres have harvested the country's first Cosmic Crisp apples, a Washington State University cross of Enterprise and Honeycrisp that resists browning after cutting, now sold exclusively at selected Checkers stores.
The Washington packer will pay past and future royalties, may not propagate the variety through 2029 or export its fruit through 2032; a judge had found the 'Glory' variety patented by a grower was genetically indistinguishable from the Canadian-bred Staccato tree delivered to him by mistake.
