An embankment on Boala haor in Madhyanagar, Sunamganj, has broken and water has entered the haor, submerging farmers' golden paddy.

The embankment in Madhyanagar upazila gave way on the morning of 2 May under the pressure of water in the Someshwari river.

According to the Madhyanagar upazila administration, rain and flash floods from the hills raised the Someshwari on Saturday, and water first flowed over the Boala haor embankment, which is under the Water Development Board. The embankment then broke as the current grew stronger. There were 574 hectares of boro paddy in the haor, of which farmers had been able to bring home 460 hectares. The administration says 84 hectares of boro paddy went under water when the embankment broke. Farmers, however, claim that 200 hectares was submerged.

Sanchay Ghosh, the upazila nirbahi officer of Madhyanagar, said flash floods and heavy rain had raised the Someshwari. With the sudden rise, the Boala haor embankment broke and water entered the haor under a culvert, submerging some of the farmers' paddy.

Heavy rain has caused waterlogging in most of the district's haors, submerging paddy on more than about 20,000 hectares.
