A tree-planting programme in keeping with the architectural design of the Independence Monument construction (third phase) project has been launched at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque inaugurated the programme beside the Independence Monument on the afternoon of 22 June.

The minister said that to present the true history of the Liberation War to future generations, the Shikha Chirantan (eternal flame), the Independence Monument and an underground Liberation War museum have already been built at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan. A project titled "Construction of the Independence Monument at Suhrawardy Udyan, Dhaka (third phase)" is now being implemented there.

"The physical construction of the project is being carried out by the Public Works Department. On the recommendation of the project implementation committee, 5,000 saplings of various species will be planted in seven parts of Suhrawardy Udyan," he said.

Those present included Liberation War Affairs Secretary Ranjit Kumar Das, Department of Architecture chief architect Mir Manzurur Rahman, project director Mir Habibul Islam, and the chairman of the project's planning committee, Dr Harunur Rashid Khan, professor in the Department of Soil, Water and Environment at Dhaka University.
