On sleepless, anxious nights, prayer is the believer's refuge

Verse 153 of Surah Al-Baqarah and hadiths from Hudhayfah and Sunan an-Nasa'i point to seeking patience and peace through prayer.

On sleepless, anxious nights, prayer is the believer's refuge
Islam

Grief, pain and worry often make nights sleepless; in the silence of the night old memories and hurts crowd in. On such lonely nights, prayer is the believer's greatest refuge.

Verse 153 of Surah Al-Baqarah directs believers to seek help through patience and prayer, assuring them that Allah is with the patient. According to a hadith narrated by Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), whenever something troubled the Prophet (peace be upon him), he would stand in prayer at once.

The Prophet would ask Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to call the iqamah and bring comfort through prayer. In a hadith in Sunan an-Nasa'i he said that the coolness of his eyes had been placed in prayer.

The piece advises that instead of drowning in worry, making ablution and standing on the prayer mat late at night brings peace to the heart, as the believer lays out his heart's pleas in prostration.
