Small effort, great reward: ten simple deeds from the hadith

Good character, keeping family ties, praying in congregation, answering the call to prayer, fasting three days a month and reciting the Quran are among ten simple deeds Barta24's Islam desk lists with their hadith sources.

Small effort, great reward: ten simple deeds from the hadith
Islam

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught some deeds that are easy to do but carry great reward. Barta24's Islam desk lists ten of them with their hadith sources.

Good character: a hadith narrated by Abu Darda (may God be pleased with him) says nothing will weigh heavier on the scales on the Day of Judgement than good character (Sunan Abu Dawud 4799). Keeping family ties: whoever wishes for wider provision and a longer life should keep ties with relatives (Sahih Bukhari 2067).

Prayer in congregation is 27 times more meritorious than praying alone (Sahih Bukhari 646). Apart from the obligatory prayers, the best prayer is the one offered at home (Sahih Bukhari 7290). Answering the call to prayer means repeating what the muezzin says and then making a supplication (Sunan Abu Dawud 524).

Fasting three days each month is like fasting the whole year (Jami at-Tirmidhi 762), because a good deed may be rewarded up to tenfold. Each letter of the Quran recited earns a good deed, multiplied tenfold, and alif-lam-mim counts as three letters, not one (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2910).

Two phrases are light on the tongue, heavy on the scales and beloved to the Most Merciful: Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, Subhanallahil Azim (Sahih Bukhari 6682). And helping people in need: a Muslim is the brother of a Muslim, who neither wrongs him nor abandons him when he is helpless.

Such deeds, the piece says, bring blessing and greater reward into life.
