Chinese authorities have stopped a man smuggling more than a hundred live snakes into mainland China. The smuggler had hidden the snakes in his trousers.

China's customs authority said in a statement that customs officers in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen stopped the smuggler as he used Futian port, a checkpoint between Hong Kong and mainland China.

During a search, six polythene bags were found in his trousers, sealed with tape.

The statement said that when the bags were opened, each contained a number of snakes of various sizes and colours. A count later found 104 snakes in all.

The customs authority did not say whether the smuggler had been arrested, but said legal action would be taken if rules had been broken.

Earlier, in June, another person was arrested while trying to smuggle 454 endangered turtles from Macau into mainland China.
