Panic has recently spread across the country over the venomous Russell's viper. Some say it is all rumour, while others have even announced rewards for killing the snake. Altogether, it has drawn mixed reactions on social media.

Mahtab Hossain wrote in jest: "So much panic has spread about the Russell's viper that many people saw the snake in their dreams last night."

Samina Bipasha wrote: "Once on a Padma char, one of our photographers took pictures and, on opening the files at home, saw a Russell's viper near a bird's feet. He had not noticed it while taking the photo. The snake did not attack him either."

Sapanjoy Chowdhury wrote: "I watched several videos about the Russell's viper. In none of them does it charge and attack; rather, it runs away. A fake vibe is being created. Poor thing."

Nasir Uddin Fakir Liton wrote: "Panic over the Russell's viper and various other venomous snakes grips the whole country. Let us all be careful. If there is an accident, look for antivenom injections at your nearest district hospital or upazila health complex."

Syed Mehedi Hasan took a different line, appealing to everyone: "Stop killing snakes."

Rasel Ibrahim wrote: "I am in an embarrassing situation. The Russell's viper should be renamed, or called 'chandrabora'."

Sardar Muhib wrote: "I can't tell whether I'm looking at my newsfeed or the Discovery Channel. The whole newsfeed is goats and snakes. Where do I go!"
