People usually think of money troubles or illness as the real crises, but bad character and slavery to base desires can bring worse consequences. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught a short supplication seeking Allah's protection from spiritual decline and physical illness.
Narration 960 in Sahih Ibn Hibban records that he would pray: 'Allahumma jannibni munkarat al-akhlaq, wal-ahwa, wal-aswa, wal-adwa', meaning: O Allah, keep me away from evil character, base desires, vile deeds and serious diseases.
The first danger is evil character: pride, envy, malice, miserliness, lying and deceit, which ruin a person and harm others. The second is base desire: when desire pulls a person from truth and justice towards unprincipled wants, it becomes self-destructive.
The remaining two parts of the prayer seek refuge from vile deeds and from serious illness, so a single supplication asks protection for character, mind, conduct and body.
