Islamic teaching draws a line between committing a sin and staying in it. A believer who errs is not expected to sink into despair, but to recognise the error and turn back to Allah without delay, and prayer is the regular means of making that return.
The Quran states, 'Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.' (Surah Az-Zumar, verse 53). That declaration of forgiveness is what closes the door on despair.
On the standing of those who repent, another verse says, 'Indeed, Allah loves those who turn to Him often.' (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 222). The one who returns again and again is the one described as loved.
The five daily prayers turn that return into a habit. Each prayer gives the worshipper a fresh occasion to stand before Allah and a place to seek forgiveness for what went before.
Scholars therefore describe two steps after a sin: first remorse and the asking of forgiveness, then keeping the link with Allah through prayer.
