The walls of Bashbari Colony in Ward 13 of Mymensingh city are now a hanging flower garden, Samakal reports. Flowers and foliage plants growing in gift baskets, old buckets and mugs have brought colour to the colony's road, and at night the scent of hasnahena (night-blooming jasmine) fills the area.
After Mymensingh City Corporation repaired the colony's broken road and drains in 2023, four young men, Murad Hasan Kanon, Mehedi Hasan Muhit, Saiful Islam and Uttam Sarkar, met residents and proposed a garden on the walls of their homes, and everyone agreed. In just three months the garden took shape along both sides of about 800 feet of road.
Discarded buckets, mugs and baskets serve as pots for orchids and many other flowers and foliage plants, with notes stuck to them reading "These plants are not for sale". Murad Hasan said they never imagined their small effort would change the neighbourhood like this.
Environment, forest and climate change minister Abdul Awal Mintoo visited the garden on Friday evening (9 October), praised the residents and urged that the model be spread to towns across the country. He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had sent him a photograph of the colony.
The minister added that, as part of the prime minister's 250-million tree planting programme, the government plans to plant about 55 to 60 million trees this year, with an emphasis on fruit, medicinal and ornamental species suited to the country's soil and climate. The report is by Samakal's staff correspondent in Mymensingh.
