Fish of several species have died at a farm built on about 40 bighas in Juri upazila, Moulvibazar. Owner Elias Mia puts the loss at about Tk 3 to 3.5 million; he fell ill on seeing the farm and his family admitted him to a private hospital in Sylhet.
From Thursday afternoon, tilapia, silver carp, rui and other fish weighing half a kilo to three kilos began floating dead at the farm in the Hatlighat area of Dhamai tea estate. Local people said the large fish were to be harvested and sold on Friday.
His sons Koyes Ahmed and Jasim Uddin put the loss at Tk 3.5 to 4 million, say they do not know how the fish died, and plan to file a written complaint with the police. Sirajul Islam, acting chairman of West Juri union parishad, said the cause is not yet known and needs investigation.
Misbah Uddin, the Barlekha upazila fisheries officer also in charge of Juri, said fish can die from poisoning, or when oxygen in the water falls and ammonia rises, and that water will be tested to find the cause. Juri police officer-in-charge Rafiqul Islam said no written complaint had yet been received and that any complaint would be investigated.
