Kishoreganj recorded 160 millimetres of rain in the past 24 hours, while the minimum temperature fell to a little over 19 degrees Celsius. The heavy rain has submerged 3,000 hectares of boro paddy fields in the haors.

Akhtar Faruk, senior observer at the Nikli weather observatory, gave the information at about 3.15pm on 29 April.

He said the rainfall was recorded in the 24 hours to noon. The day before, on 28 April, the district had only 20 millimetres of rain. The rain may continue tomorrow.

According to the Meteorological Department in Dhaka, over the same period Bhola recorded 151 millimetres, Feni 148 millimetres, Mymensingh 115 millimetres, Khepupara 114 millimetres, Cumilla and Sitakunda 103 millimetres and Netrokona 89 millimetres.

Several days of heavy rain have submerged about 950 hectares of low-lying land in the haor areas of Kishoreganj, the report says. Farmers are struggling to harvest boro paddy, and they are unable to dry the paddy they have cut and brought in from the fields.

There are also fears of heavy damage to vegetable fields in various parts of the district.

Dr Sadikur Rahman, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension, said field-level information showed about 3,000 hectares of land had already gone under water, and the submerged area was growing by the day.
