Friday's hour of answered prayer, and four supplications taught in the Quran

Friday holds a special place for Muslims. In a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA), the Prophet (PBUH) said that on this day there is an hour when, if a Muslim servant standing in prayer asks Allah for something, Allah grants it; he indicated with his hand that the time is very short (Sahih al-Bukhari, 935).

Scholars have pointed to the time from the start of the khutbah until the end of the prayer, and to the period after Asr until sunset, as likely candidates. Because the exact hour is not known, the article advises sincere supplication, seeking forgiveness and remembrance of Allah at different times through the day. One may ask for one's needs, forgiveness of sins, guidance and wellbeing, and recite supplications taught in the Quran.

The first is the prayer for good in this world and the next, Surah al-Baqarah, verse 201: "Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhaban-nar." Its meaning: Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire. In a few words it asks for peace in this life and deliverance in the next.

The second is a prayer to keep the heart steady after guidance, Surah Al Imran, verse 8. Its meaning: Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself; truly You are the Bestower.

The third asks forgiveness and a good end among the righteous, Surah Al Imran, verse 193. Its meaning: Our Lord, forgive us our sins, remove from us our misdeeds, and cause us to die with the righteous.

The fourth is a prayer for oneself, one's parents and all believers, Surah Ibrahim, verses 40 and 41. Its meaning: My Lord, make me and my descendants steadfast in prayer; our Lord, accept my supplication; our Lord, forgive me, my parents and the believers on the Day of Reckoning.
