The most harmful things in a person's life are envy and arrogance. They make a peaceful life poisonous, and envy makes personal, family and social life unbearable.
In the Holy Quran, Allah says: "Do not walk on Allah's earth with arrogance, for you can never split the earth open and go beneath it, and you can never reach the height of the mountains." (Surah Bani Israil, verse 37)
In verse 11 of Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says: "O believers, let no people mock another people; perhaps they are better than those who mock. Nor let women mock other women; perhaps they are better than those who mock. And do not defame one another or call one another by offensive names."
Why people envy
How wretched it is to call someone by a bad name after faith. Those who do not turn back from such behaviour are wrongdoers. We must remember that envy and hatred are a deadly disease, and when an envious person engages in envious acts, he must be shunned. Why do people envy one another? In the view of sociologists, the reasons include begrudging others' good fortune, enmity, pride, jealousy of one another, the wish for leadership, thinking oneself worthy, seeking personal advantage and the wish for power.
The envious person thinks he alone is honoured and valuable in society and everyone else is beneath him. That is why Allah, Lord of the worlds, has given guidance in the Holy Quran on escaping envy and hatred and the harm of the envious.
Verse 3 of Surah Al-Falaq says: "And I seek refuge with You from the evil of the envier when he envies."
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Beware of envy, for envy destroys good deeds just as fire consumes (burns) wood." (Abu Dawud, Mishkat)
Shunned by society
No one in society likes an envious person. Everyone looks on him badly, and though he lives among everyone, no one thinks well of him.
In verse 34 of Surah An-Nisa, Allah says: "Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty?"
Allah, Lord of the worlds, does not love the envious either. In the light of the Quran and Sunnah, arrogance too is a great sin. We must remember that the first sin was committed through arrogance.
