Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is building the country's largest Miyawaki forest in a designated green belt on the east side of the Lake 11 bank, next to Bridge 4 at Uttara Diabari.
DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz inaugurated the afforestation project, covering about 54.63 katha, on Wednesday (26 November).
The project combines the conventional Miyawaki method with modern environmental thinking.
Planting and design
About 14,000 saplings are being planted in the urban forest, covering some 225 native species of fruit, berry, flowering, medicinal, timber, ornamental, conifer, shrub and bush plants.
The project will be implemented with sensitive spatial design guided by biomimicry principles, giving priority to the "biophilic" idea of strengthening the connection between people and nature.
Artificial mounds have been built for natural drainage, and loam soil has been mixed with set amounts of vermicompost, organic fertiliser, bone meal, coco dust, rice husk and liquid fertiliser to create conditions suited to a forest.
The forest includes the acclaimed Japanese concept of "shinrin-yoku", or forest bathing, which will benefit people's physical and mental health. Sloping, winding paths allow walking inside the dense forest and along the lake shore.
DNCC is implementing the urban forest in the green belt area according to the design set by the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK).
