Dengue admissions at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) have climbed sharply. They were comparatively low in the first half of the year, began rising in July, and reached 1,403 in September alone. Another 127 patients were admitted in the first three days of October.

By 3 October the hospital had admitted 3,085 dengue patients this year; 42 died, 2,181 were discharged and 579 left of their own accord. Monthly admissions were 45 in January, 26 in February, 30 in March, 41 in April, 75 in May, 122 in June, 372 in July and 844 in August. Two patients died in wards 402 and 502 in the first three days of October.

Over three years, DMCH admitted 3,409 dengue patients in 2024 and 3,888 in 2025, and 3,085 so far this year to 3 October.

Dengue patients are treated in medicine wards 402, 502 and 702 of the new building. The hospital gives every patient a mosquito net, but many do not use it. Farhan, 18, from Gazipur, said the nets were handed out but there was nothing to hang them from. Afroza Akter from Kamrangirchar said the wards are crowded and hot, and a net keeps the air out.

Riaz Uddin, ward master of the new building, said every patient in the dedicated wards has a net but many do not use them, which puts the relatives staying with them at risk of dengue too.
