Prices of edible oil, vegetables and chicken have risen over the week, while onion and green chilli have become somewhat cheaper. Prices of other goods are unchanged.

This picture emerged from visits to the Mirpur 11 market, Mirpur Kalshi market and the Pallabi area of the capital on Friday morning (15 October).

The prices of most vegetables have risen by Tk 10-20 a kg. In these markets flat beans are selling at Tk 120 a kg, round brinjal Tk 80, long brinjal Tk 60, cauliflower Tk 60 a piece, bitter gourd Tk 60, tomato Tk 150-160 and yardlong beans Tk 80. Chinese carrot sells at Tk 160 a kg, ash gourd Tk 40 a piece, bottle gourd Tk 60 a piece depending on size, sweet pumpkin Tk 40 a kg, snake gourd Tk 60, pointed gourd Tk 40, okra Tk 60, spiny gourd Tk 60, radish Tk 60, taro stolons Tk 60 and papaya Tk 20 a kg.

Md Faruk, a vegetable seller at the Mirpur 11 market, told Banglanews that prices had risen by Tk 10-20 a kg because of low supply, and that vegetable prices would fall in the winter season.

Potatoes are selling at Tk 18-20 a kg in these markets. Onion prices have fallen by Tk 5-10 a kg over the week: local onion sells at Tk 65 and Indian onion at Tk 60.

Onion seller Md Kabir Hossain told Banglanews that prices had started to fall because of imports, with onions from Burma and India coming into the market. If imports fall, prices may rise again.

Green chilli has become cheaper in these markets, down Tk 40 a kg to Tk 120. Last week it sold at Tk 160 a kg here.

Green bananas are selling at Tk 30 a hali (four), papaya at Tk 20 a kg, cucumber at Tk 50 and lemons at Tk 15 a hali.

Dried chilli sells at Tk 150-250 a kg, garlic Tk 80-130, local ginger Tk 70-80 and Chinese ginger Tk 160 a kg. Turmeric sells at Tk 160-220 a kg. Indian lentils sell at Tk 90 a kg and local lentils at Tk 110.

Edible oil has become dearer in these markets. Loose oil is up Tk 10 a litre to Tk 160 at retail, while various brands sell at Tk 153-158 a litre.
