Cases of colds and high fever in children are rising fast as the seasons change. The outpatient department of the children's hospital at Shyamoli in Dhaka now sees at least 500 patients a day, most with high fever, breathing difficulty, coughs and colds or diarrhoea.
Sudden swings in the weather are bringing influenza, chikungunya, seasonal coronavirus, rhinovirus and diarrhoea; in some children these turn into pneumonia that needs long hospital treatment. Several members of one family are often ill at once, adding to the crowds.
Hospital director Professor Dr Mirza Md Ziaul Islam said frequent rain amid intense heat and the resulting swings in temperature have set many viruses circulating. Fever, coughs, colds and diarrhoea are spreading among children in almost every part of the country, he said, and a significant number of those affected also have dengue or measles.
Virologists say these viruses rarely kill quickly but can lead to lung infections without timely treatment, and older people face the same risk. Measles, dengue, typhoid and pneumonia circulating together are making things harder.
Doctors advise avoiding unnecessary crowds and seeing a specialist without delay if a child shows any unusual symptom.
