Twenty farmers in Chuadanga have received air flow machines, which ventilate onion stores to keep the bulbs from rotting. The machines were handed over at a ceremony on the Chuadanga Sadar upazila premises at 3:30pm on Monday, 5 October.
Sadar upazila agriculture officer Sharmin Akter said the government is providing the machines for genuine onion growers. Each machine costs Tk 21,000, and Tk 7,000 more will be given to build a storage room. One machine can keep 20 to 25 tonnes of onions.
Even with a machine, she said, onions must be dried well before they are stored.
Sadar upazila nirbahi officer Tithi Mitra presided over the ceremony, and district council administrator Sharifuzzaman Sharif was chief guest.
The report is based on a dispatch from Chuadanga by the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
