Chattogram warehouses mixed rotten DAP into good fertiliser, officials say

A joint raid by the consumer rights directorate and BADC found substandard fertiliser being blended at two Sadarghat warehouses; about 40,000 sacks have gone out, some possibly to government stores in BADC sacks.

The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection and the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) found two warehouses in Sadarghat, Chattogram city, blending rotten, substandard DAP fertiliser with good fertiliser for sale. The joint raid on Jilani Enterprise's warehouse and Chowdhury Majhi's warehouse took place on Wednesday afternoon.

People involved in the raid say about 40,000 sacks of adulterated and substandard fertiliser have already been sent to different parts of the country. Initial information suggests some was supplied to government stores in BADC sacks; several hundred BADC sacks were found at one side of a warehouse.

Thousands of sacks were piled up inside. Chemicals and water were seeping from some, and the fertiliser in others had set as hard as brick, raising questions about quality and expiry. In the neighbouring warehouse, good DAP was being mixed into piles of rotten fertiliser, then bagged and sent to markets in various areas, officials said.

BADC officials said they would investigate which government stores received the fertiliser, where it was supplied and who bought it, and take action. Md Foyzullah, deputy director of the consumer rights directorate in Chattogram, said a ring is behind the adulteration and legal action will follow an investigation.
