The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection fined 116 businesses a total of Tk 1,091,000 on Wednesday (7 October) in nationwide checks on the markets for gas cylinders, edible oil and other essentials. Fifty-seven teams worked at once in Dhaka city and 47 districts.
The same drive uncovered milk adulteration at the house of Abul Basar in Koidanga, Bhangura upazila of Pabna. The directorate said milk was being mixed with palm oil, detergent and a jelly-like substance. Two jerrycans of the jelly substance, one of palm oil, the finished milk and a blender were seized and destroyed on the spot.
Abul Basar was fined Tk 100,000 under sections 42 and 43 of the Consumer Rights Protection Act 2009, and the place where the milk was made was temporarily sealed.
The directorate said the special checks were meant to make sure gas cylinders sell at the government price, keep staple prices stable and keep supplies normal. Teams checked prices and whether shops displayed updated price lists, kept sales vouchers and gave them to buyers, and whether anyone was overcharging. Traders were told not to create artificial shortages, hoard without reason or obstruct supply.
Its advice to buyers: check the weight, seal, expiry date and any visible fault before buying a gas cylinder, compare prices with the list and ask for a receipt or voucher. Overcharging, irregularities or fraud can be reported on the hotline 16121. The directorate said such checks will continue.
