A VR, or virtual reality, headset is a technology product. Virtual reality is a computer-controlled system in which, through modelling and simulation, people can interact with an artificial three-dimensional sensory environment. This environment can look exactly like the real world.
The technology is now being used on cows. The aim is to relieve cows' anxiety and improve their mood so that they give more milk. In Russia, cows fitted with VR are shown a warm pasture to roam, which eases their anxiety and improves their mental state.
A pilot near Moscow
Russia's agriculture ministry has taken up the project, and the pilot is running at a large dairy farm near the capital, Moscow. Researchers say happy cows give more milk. The ministry says that in a calm environment cows not only give more milk but the quality of the milk also improves.
This is thought to be the world's first VR developed through research for cows. Russia's RusMoloko farm is involved in the research with the country's agriculture ministry. In a statement it said a computer-generated summer pasture has been created using VR. Researchers say red tones are used, because cows prefer red to green or blue.
