The potato planting season has begun in Ullapara, Sirajganj, and seed potatoes are selling briskly at local markets. On Friday, 9 October, Romana seed potatoes sold for Tk 28 to 30 a kilogram at the upazila headquarters market. The upazila agriculture office says the target this season is 1,038 hectares of potatoes.
Some 15 to 18 traders were selling seed potatoes that day, among them Md Abdul Khaleque, Sanowar Hossain and Abul Kalam Azad, who bring seed from wholesale markets in Joypurhat, Bogura and elsewhere in the north.
Romana is the variety farmers want most. Cardinal and local varieties are also in demand and cost a little less.
Abul Kalam, a farmer from Nandibera village, will plant eight bighas this year and has finished preparing the land. He will mostly use seed he kept himself but came to buy about two maunds to make up a shortfall, and bargained for Romana seed. Another farmer, Helal Hossain, has prepared just under one bigha and bought Romana seed at Tk 30 a kilogram.
Traders say the trade will be in full swing in about a week, when seed kept by farming households will come to market alongside wholesale stock. Across the upazila, farmers are busy preparing land for potatoes.
