Recent rain has restored needed moisture to aman rice fields across parts of Rajshahi and Naogaon, easing a long dry spell and the cost of irrigation. Farmers now hope for a good harvest if the weather holds.
In Charghat, Rajshahi, rainwater has collected in aman fields, wilting seedlings have revived and many plants are coming into ear. Farmer Alim Uddin of Bhatpara village said the dry fields had threatened extra irrigation costs, but the rain has brought the water they needed.
Charghat upazila agriculture officer Al Mamun Hasan said aman needs moisture during growth, flowering and grain filling, and the rain has supplied it. He advised farmers to make sure water does not stand in fields for long and to seek the agriculture department's advice quickly if disease or pests appear.
Aman fields across eight unions of Raninagar in Naogaon are green. The upazila set a target of 19,070 hectares, and about 18,500 hectares were planted. The upazila agriculture office said timely planting, enough fertiliser and irrigation, uninterrupted power and modern methods point to a good yield, and additional agriculture officer Zahidul Islam said farmers are being advised on close monitoring and timely use of fertiliser and pesticide.
