Its name is Kalopahar (Black Mountain). It eats 70 kg of feed at each meal, stays under a fan 24 hours a day and is bathed three times a day. This huge buffalo has been prepared in Munshiganj for the coming Eid-ul-Azha. Weighing about 37 maunds, Kalopahar is the biggest buffalo in the country this Eid, its owners claim. It is being raised by Dutch Dairy Limited, one of the country's most modern agro farms.
A visit to the farm at Satghoria in Louhajang upazila of Munshiganj found Kalopahar standing 6 feet tall with a massive body. The Jafarabadi buffalo weighs about 1,500 kg. Alamin, a herdsman from Bagerhat, is looking after it for sale at Eid. Its dung is cleared and it is bathed right after each meal. It is kept in an iron-railed enclosure under a shed, and buyers and other people come to the farm every day to see it.
Care and feeding
The farm's sales manager, Naim, told Jago News that the buffalo had been raised with great care for 5 years after being brought from India. Fans run 24 hours a day. It is fed a special cattle feed called silage, made from a mix of maize plants, straw, bran and husk. Two people look after it, and it is bathed with shampoo three times a day.
The vet said the buffalo had grown so large because of the special care. The owners hope the record-weight animal will sell for a record price.
The farm's vet, Mostafa Kamal, said: "We are raising it and it is looked after 24 hours a day. Vaccination and deworming have been done properly. With cow comfort in mind, fresh air is provided 24 hours a day, because buffaloes feel the heat a lot. It is also bathed several times a day."
Two buffaloes at Tk 25 lakh each
Asif Mridha, project manager of Dutch Dairy Limited, said one reason for the name Kalopahar was its great height. "It is the biggest in Bangladesh because its live weight is 1,500 kg. No farm has a buffalo this heavy, so this is the biggest buffalo in Bangladesh."
He said the farm also had another buffalo called Kalomanik, weighing 1,300 kg. "Its eyes are very beautiful, like a jewel (manik), which is why it is called Kalomanik." The farm is asking Tk 25 lakh each, Tk 50 lakh for the two. "We hope the big buffalo will sell for Tk 25 lakh."
