Victor Hugo Sosa, mayor of the town of San Pedro Huamelula in southern Mexico, has married a crocodile. The crocodile he married is named Alicia Adriana. Indian news outlet NDTV reported this on Sunday (2 July), citing the news agency AFP.
According to the NDTV report, Mayor Sosa married the crocodile through traditional rituals to bring good fortune to the townspeople. For the wedding, the crocodile was dressed as a bride.
A traditional ritual
Before the wedding, the crocodile was carried from house to house so residents could dance with it in their arms. To stop it biting anyone before the ceremony, its mouth was tied shut. It was then taken to the town hall for the wedding ceremony.
As part of the ritual, a local fisherman cast a net and chanted a prayer that the marriage would bring a good catch of fish, and with it prosperity, balance and peace to the town.
At the ceremony, Mayor Sosa said he was taking responsibility for the bride. "We love each other. You cannot marry without love. I have married the princess out of love," he said.
After the wedding the mayor danced with his bride to traditional music. "We are happy, because we celebrate the union of two cultures," he said. After the dance he kissed the crocodile.
About 230 years ago, a marriage like this brought peace between two indigenous groups in the area, the Chontal and the Huave. Since then, a man from the area has been married to a female crocodile.
