For the first time in a European country, a law has been passed to legalise growing cannabis in people's homes or gardens, Sputnik reports. Those who grow cannabis, however, must be 18 or older.

Growing cannabis had previously been legalised in Uruguay, Canada and 11 states of the United States. The Luxembourg government says that if people grow cannabis for their own use, the crimes committed after using it will decline.

Many see the decision as economically profitable. Even in a country such as the Netherlands, where the sale and use of cannabis in "coffee houses" is permitted, no one has been allowed to grow or sell it privately.
