Pink lotus and red water lilies now cover the Lawal, Ariyal and Purakura wetlands at Zinda Hankur, beside Zinda Park in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj. Visitors from Dhaka and nearby districts are coming to see the flowers on the roughly 1,000-acre natural wetland.

In the morning sun, dew glints on the lotus petals, ducks paddle in groups and flocks of white egrets fly overhead. Many families take to small wooden boats to explore.

Rows of dinghies wait to take visitors out, at Tk 300 an hour for a boat that holds three people. On public holidays, when crowds are heavy, boatmen usually limit trips to 40 minutes.

Boatmen say the flowers bloom for about three months at this time of year. The banks are busy with visitors through the season and grow quiet again once it ends.

At the entrance and along the banks, local women sell freshly picked lotus flowers for Tk 30 to 50 a bunch, depending on the buyer's choice, extra income for them while the season lasts.
