An acting headteacher has been suspended for carrying out a tree-planting programme at his school by planting branches instead of saplings. He is Shyamal Chandra Halder, acting headteacher of No 14 Madhya Sonakur Government Primary School in Kaukhali upazila.
An office order signed by district primary education officer Molla Baktiar Rahman was issued on 6 August. Kaukhali upazila primary education officer Md Ahedul Islam confirmed the matter on Tuesday night, 11 August.
The order said that despite government instructions to plant saplings under the prime minister's special tree-planting programme, branches had been planted instead. As the allegation was prima facie proved, Shyamal Chandra Halder was suspended from service from 19 July. During suspension he will receive only a subsistence allowance under the rules, the order said.
Under the prime minister's special programme, there was a clear instruction to plant fruit, timber and medicinal tree saplings in every school compound on 15 July. The accused teacher instead had pupils plant tree branches and uploaded the photos to a teachers' social media group. On 19 July, Kaukhali assistant upazila primary education officer Md Rafiqul Islam investigated on the spot and found the allegation to be true. Given its seriousness, the teacher was suspended under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules.
Separate complaint at the school
Separately, a female teacher at the same school has sought redress from various offices, accusing assistant teacher Milan Krishna Pal of character assassination and of making her feel unsafe. She said the district primary education officer had investigated the matter that day and that she would give details later.
Upazila primary education officer Md Ahedul Islam said the acting headteacher was suspended on 19 July after the allegation was proved, and no specific end date has been set for the suspension. The female teacher's complaint will be investigated and action taken quickly under the rules, he said.
