Irish food prices hold steady in September while energy costs climb 2.9 percent

The CSO's flash estimate puts annual inflation at 3.9 percent, with food prices unchanged on the month and up 0.3 percent on the year, but energy up 15.3 percent since September 2025.

Food prices in Ireland were unchanged in September from August and 0.3 percent higher than a year earlier, according to a flash estimate from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Agriland reports.

Overall, the EU Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) for Ireland rose an estimated 3.9 percent in the 12 months to September and 0.2 percent on the month, up from annual inflation of 3.4 percent in August. Eurozone inflation was 3.2 percent in August. Excluding energy and unprocessed food, prices rose 2.8 percent in the year.

Energy drove the increase. CSO statistician Anthony Dawson said energy prices rose an estimated 2.9 percent in September and 15.3 percent since September 2025, while services prices fell 0.4 percent on the month but were 4.1 percent higher than a year earlier.

Separate CSO figures show clearances of marked gas oil, the green diesel used in farm machinery, fell 1 percent in the 12 months to June 2026, although June's 107 million litres were above June 2025's 102 million. Kerosene clearances were 11 percent lower in the first half of 2026 than a year earlier.
