A total of 445 farmers have been paid €2,225,000 under Ireland's scheme to support Long Established Young Farmers, known as the Forgotten Farmers scheme, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon has confirmed in reply to a parliamentary question from Cork North-West Fianna Fáil TD Aindrias Moynihan.
The Forgotten Farmers were under 40 in 2015 and had started farming before 2008, but never received young farmer Installation Aid and were not eligible for young farmer supports under the Common Agricultural Policy from 2015 because of the date they first set up.
The scheme opened on 22 July 2025 and closed to applications on 13 August 2025, with €5 million allocated to it in Budget 2025. By county, Donegal had the most recipients with 33 and Dublin the fewest with one, according to a table the minister provided.
Last year 809 of the 1,254 applications were deemed ineligible by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, leaving the 445 successful applicants now paid, and less than half of the €5 million allocation spent.
