Chattogram's district administration raided eight godowns in New Chaktai, under Bakalia police station, and seized 1,800 sacks of TSP, MOP and DAP fertiliser stored without a licence.
The special mobile court sat from 3:30pm to 7pm on Monday, 5 October, in Bheramarket and New Chaktai, acting on a tip-off. It was run by Md Sakib Ul Alam, assistant commissioner (land) of the Sadar circle, on the instructions of Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia.
The court fined one trader Tk 300,000. Another was fined Tk 300,000 for the same offence and sentenced to six months of rigorous imprisonment. Both fines were collected in cash on the spot.
According to the district administration, the fertiliser was held with no valid licence or papers. The seized stock was handed to the joint custody of the Panchlaish metropolitan agriculture officer and the officer in charge of Bakalia police station for further action under the law.
Sakib Ul Alam said there were strict instructions to show no leniency to anyone trying to create an artificial shortage or hoard fertiliser at farmers' expense, and that the monitoring would continue to keep order in the fertiliser market.
Seizures of hoarded and smuggled fertiliser have been reported from several districts in recent weeks.
